App deep linking

Growth

What app deep linking does

Clicks from social apps (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Telegram) open in a restricted in-app browser instead of the phone's real browser. There, native apps often don't open and offers can misbehave.

When your link points to an app, tapurl shows a short page whose button opens the destination in the native app (YouTube, Instagram, and so on) instead of trapping the visitor in the in-app browser. It's available on the Growth plan and above, per project.

How it works

If a click comes from an in-app browser and your link points to a known app, tapurl serves a lightweight page with an "Open in browser" button. Tapping it lets the phone hand the link to the native app through its Universal Links (iOS) or App Links (Android).

On Android the exit is reliable. On iOS the button uses an honest link tap, which is the most consistent way to leave the in-app browser — but iOS never guarantees it, so a visible button is always shown as a fallback.

If your link points to a regular website (not an app), there's nothing to hand off, so tapurl redirects directly without the extra page.

Supported apps

The escape page is shown when the destination is one of the apps with reliable deep links:

YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X (Twitter), Facebook, Spotify, Amazon, Pinterest, Reddit, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Twitch, Netflix, AliExpress, Telegram, WhatsApp.

Any other destination is treated as a website and redirected directly.

How to enable

  1. Open your project and edit its settings.
  2. Turn on "Push clicks out of in-app browsers".
  3. Save. From now on, links in this project that point to an app will show the escape page when opened inside a social app.

Analytics

The link stats page shows an "In-app browser escape" block: how many clicks were shown the escape page, how many left for the native app, and the success rate.

A per-OS split is included because Android and iOS behave very differently — Android exits reliably, iOS often can't be confirmed, so its rate looks lower and the real number may be higher.

Limits and honest expectations

In-app browsers are controlled by the social apps themselves, so a 100% escape is not possible on any tool — iOS in particular caps how far a website can push a visitor out. tapurl uses the most reliable method available and always shows a button so the visitor can leave manually.

Because tapurl is a redirect link, it can't force a website (without its own app) to open in Safari; those stay in the in-app browser by design and are redirected directly. Use the per-OS analytics to decide whether the escape is worth keeping for your traffic.
